It’s that awards time of year again, and a few movies are appearing on a lot of ‘best of’ lists and amongst the nominations of the first slew of awards (Golden Globes coming up).
Tarantino’s latest Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is quite rightly on everyones radar. The ode to film making and Hollywood in the late 60’s is pure Tarantino (right down to rewriting history and loving close ups of actors feet). Robert Richardson ASC as DP has once again committed a masterpiece to celluloid.
1917 is rightly getting a lot of buzz, the Sam Mendes flick is shot as if it is one take in real time. Could Roger Deakins be in the Oscar nominations again this year? Well, obviously he will, just maybe he’ll get another one to balance the mantelpiece…
Expect the usual bitching about streaming not being real movies to rear its ugly head again. Surely after the wonder of Roma and the solid storytelling of The Irishman we’ll soon be able to put that issue to bed.
The AFI best movies of 2019 are:
- The Farewell
- The Irishman
- Jojo Rabbit
- Knives Out
- Little Women
- Marriage Story
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
- Richard Jewell
