The Favourite has won a record ten awards at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) held on 2nd December 2018 at Old Billingsgate. The period black comedy was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and Robbie Ryan BSC ISC was the cinematographer.

Set in the reign of Queen Anne in the early 18th century, the movie revolves around the increasingly loopy queen, played by Olivia Colman, and her two confidantes, the Duchess of Marlborough and her younger cousin Abigail. The Duchess is played by Rachel Weisz and Abigail by Emma Stone. Colman was awarded the best actress gong alongside Weisz’ best supporting actress.

Robbie Ryan (American Honey, I Daniel Blake) has created a unique vision, utilising natural light (often candlelight), shooting on Kodak 35mm film, wide lenses (including a 6mm ultra-wide) and very fluid camera movement.

There is a really good interview with Ryan over on the Kodak website, which is well worth a read.

The Favourite had its world premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on August 30, 2018, winning the Grand Jury Prize and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for Colman’s performance. The movie was produced by Element Pictures, Scarlet Films, Waypoint Entertainment and Film4, with distribution by Fox Searchlight Pictures.
